How to avoid picking the wrong mentor

Listen Now!  How to avoid picking the wrong mentor

Just because someone has made a lot of money – it doesn’t mean they’ll be great mentor. Time and time again I take calls with people who have regretted their investment decisions because they didn’t invest in the right things or people.

In this episode I’m blowing up the truthbombs on how you can avoid making bad investments and find the right mentor or business coach for you.

How to avoid picking the wrong mentor

When it comes to mentorship – I know a lot of people call themselves a mentor. What you call yourself is up to you. It is what you do for that person which truly counts. It is interesting that you get the odd person saying “I am looking for a mentor” when they are looking to up-level and area of their life. Typically this happens in the business coaching industry. Someone is looking for a business coaching mentor to move them further along in their journey.

When you get a client like this, usually they don’t know what they want other than more. They want more from their business, their area of expertise, their life. It can often happen in high-performance. When someone comes to you brand new, looking for mentoring, they can be confused about what they need.

Confusion about needs

I recently had someone reach out to me as they wanted a mentor. We had a quick conversation. And it went: “you’ve done what I want to do so I’d like you to help me achieve the same.” What they mean by this is they’ve seen me achieve seven-figures and want to me to show them how to do it for themselves.

Now, I can help people build seven-figure businesses. But that can’t be the only reasoning. What works for my business may not work for yours. Fortunately, I am in a confident position to see what works for businesses. And what works within many industries through many years of coaching and running businesses.

However, what concerns me about people looking for a mentor, they pick someone who inspires them and they hope it will work for them in the exact same way. They are looking for an influencer status. And they are looking for a secret sauce.

It is the wrong way to go about it.

What you need to be looking for is what is missing in your business and your knowledge gaps. All these elements are needed to diagnose what you need in your business or life. So that you know where you are stuck and where you need help.

Get the right mentor for your needs

Doing this requires you to put aside your ego. And to look at things truthfully. You will be able to pick a better mentor or business coach to be able to move forward. Whereas thinking, ‘they’ve done it so it proves’ success may not be right to get you there.

I had someone who I had several calls with and I wouldn’t commit to working with them. They couldn’t be honest with themselves about what is going on in their business. Until I know your problems, I cannot diagnose where I am best placed to help you. I know many millionnaires who couldn’t coach a pen. And I don’t mean this in a derogatory way. It is not how they are built.

There are so many coaches who think because they are successful at one thing then it will work for everyone. And then wonder why it doesn’t work for the majority of the cohort that go through. They may not have all the right pieces or be missing the foundations.  If you’re not honest about this – there is no integrity.

And the outcome is that their clients risk using up their entire budget on something that isn’t going to work for them.

Stop looking for any old mentor

Look for a mentor who is going to work for your business. If you don’t understand what it is that is wrong – have those conversations with someone who knows. This is what I’m here for and you can book a clarity call with me. I drill into what you need, if I can help I will let you know. If not, I will know someone who can help. This will help you make a sensible decision on how you spend your money.

One of the known problems is that your niche is off.  And knowing your niche is off is not enough. You need someone to help stick that flag in the sand. Someone to sort out the messaging and help you get your niche right.

If you see others in your industry being successful and wondering why you are not – then you need to speak to someone to figure out why before you spend money on a coach. If you start spending money before doing this research then it may be a waste. And I’ve created this podcast episode because I’m so upset with seeing people wasting their money and hearing “I wish I’d come across you first”.
